Every San Francisco easter egg in Zombie SF
Zombie SF is a love letter to San Francisco, including the parts locals roll their eyes at. Here is what to look for while you're not being chased. Spoilers ahead, obviously.
Rooftops along Market Street
The X on Market Square
In July 2023, a huge lit X went up on the roof of 1355 Market, the building that housed Twitter's headquarters. It was taken down within days after the city said it had no permit. In Zombie SF it is back, glowing over Mid-Market, permit or no permit.
The old Uber HQ
The building that was Uber's headquarters on Market Street carries a black billboard: UBER HQ (FORMERLY): Your zombie is 2 min away.
Parody AI-startup billboards
If you have driven down US-101 lately, you know the genre. Rooftops around the map carry billboards such as:
- AGI BY FRIDAY: Now hiring 10x engineers. Equity only.
- STOP HIRING HUMANS: Hire an agent that never sleeps (or dies).
- SERIES A FOR THE APOCALYPSE: We invest in founders who survive.
- YOUR AI WILL SEE YOU NOW: No appointment needed.
- VIBE CODED: Shipped to prod. No tests.
- RTO MANDATORY: Even for the undead.
- DEMO DAY: Zombie batch. Apply now.
- RAISING AT $10B: Pre-revenue. Post-human.
- STUDIO · $4,800/MO: Pets ok. Zombies negotiable.
Which billboard goes on which roof is shuffled, so you won't see them all in one run.
The Founder
Every fifth wave, a boss walks out: a giant in a fleece vest, lanyard and floating FOUNDER · CEO badge. The banner warns Raising at a $10B valuation. Kill him before he raises. Take him down and the feed reads THE FOUNDER IS DOWN. EXIT CANCELLED. He is worth 5,000 points.
Theatre marquees
The Golden Gate, Warfield, Strand, Curran and other theatres on the map get lit marquees with chaser bulbs, every one billing the same show: TONIGHT: THE DEAD. The real history of those buildings is in the field guide.
Street life
- Neon hotel signs: every building OpenStreetMap tags as a hotel gets a blade sign, so the clusters match real life.
- Delivery robots: the little six-wheeled sidewalk robots roll up and drop off ammo and a health pack. Possibly the most useful tech in the city.
- Pigeons: they gather on sidewalks and take off when you get close or start shooting.
- Murals: painted walls read TENDERLOIN, TL STRONG, SF LOVE, FOG CITY, EDDY ST and HELLA, and one has a Golden Gate Bridge at sunset.
- Bay Wheels docks: placed where real docks are mapped, and the e-bikes are rideable.
- Lime scooters: dropped on sidewalks, naturally. Press E to ride.
- Recology trucks and SFPD cruisers with flashing light bars are parked on a few blocks.
- Karl the Fog rolls through the whole map.
Traffic jokes
Robotaxis politely stop for you and drive straight through zombies. Each vehicle gets its own kill-feed line, from WAYMO ROADKILL to MUNI ROADKILL. The full breakdown is in Waymo vs zombies.
The time on the clock
The title screen says it all: Eddy & Jones. 2:13 AM. The fog rolled in and the dead got up.
Found one we missed? It's probably on the next block. Go look.
